40 years after the Primary Phase was broadcast, The Hitchhiker's Guide returns to Radio 4 with the Hexagonal Phase. And it... wasn't very good. It was fun to hear some of the original cast reunited, but it just didn't feel right, and to be honest it wasn't very funny.

I was never a huge fan though I did watch and enjoy the TV series. Isn't it always the case, though, that revived series don't have the magic of the original? This is a different time and HH's freshness and originality has since been much copied and extended. Those who loved the original always will but I'd be surprised if it garnered new followers.

I'd be surprised if it garnered new followers. It certainly won't through this. Apart from the disappointing quality, it also (judging from the first episode) relies too much on the listener knowing/being able to remember what happened previously; since the last series was broadcast in 2005 and things got pretty complicated that's asking a lot!

I think it's also pretty much of its time. As you say, Helen, it was fresh and original and surprising when first broadcast and Adams was a genius. But now he's no longer with us, it should be left alone.

I've just been listening. I'm still not a fan and – how dare they – they've remixed the theme music! I do wish they wouldn't do this. I wonder if it's to do with rights on the original because it often happens but it's REALLY ANNOYING!

Beg to differ but I found it a cut above some of the dross that is promoted as comedy on the wireless.

Well, I think I'm giving up. It barely raised a smile from me this week. I was tempted to turn off halfway through but felt duty bound to give it a proper chance.

Stephen Hawking was in last week's episode. I didn't listen this week - was he there again or was it a one-off? In any case, I guess it was his last non-scientific appearance.

He was in the Radio Times cast list, and there was a tribute to him at the start, but he didn't appear.

We used to listen to the original in the car, on the way back from shopping when the boys were small. We were all excited when the tv series was announced, but I felt it wasn't as good as the radio version. You imagined all those robots. The film was even worse. Is Slartibarfast still alive?

The radio version was always the best, to my mind.
