A place where you can ask about, and discuss, anything in your garden, and add some pictures if you want.

I was away last week and have come back to find my fuschia is dying. I think maybe the soil is just too wet?

*pops head in* I am up against slugs, ants, pigeons, a delinquent squirrel, next door's cat, not to mention torrential rain and strong winds. Gardening can be a right battle.

Doesn't sound good, could be waterlogged, I would lift it,and see what condition the root ball is.
Or could be vine weevil grub attack, they will be visible as little maggots chomping on the roots.

I'll do that tomorrow morning. Is there anything I can do to save it if it is waterlogged?

Put it in a pot and don't over-water it. Fuchsias quite like a tight root ball, I believe, so maybe it was just a little bit underdeveloped to cope in the ground.

LOL!
Yeah, could be. It is quite small. I'll take it back out and pot it again.

Ahh, just had a thought. If it is a half-hardy one, it could be it caught a late frost at the garden centre and is now feeling the effects.

It looked ok when I bought it. I usually check for signs of damage and I try to buy one with more buds than flowers. It's a shame cos at my last house I had a massive fuschia bush and I really miss it.

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd say hello here as I love gardening. I don't have a garden, but I do have an awful lot of plants all around our town. I'm a member of our 'in Bloom' team that enter in the Heart of England in Bloom regional campaign. This year we are also finalists in the RHS Britain in Bloom.
It's the 4th time we've been in BiB. The first time was in 2007 - we were judged in the HoE on a beautiful sunny day near the end of July and then a couple of days later the heavens opened and we had a big flood. Most of our displays were damaged, washed away or killed off by the mud left behind. The media descended on the town. Our Chairman was interviewed by a German TV news reporter, and it was so funny watching him talking whilst being dubbed in German! So we replanted where we could, with what was left at our local nursery (early August, so no bedding plants left). BiB judges were shown round the town where piles of furniture, white goods etc were piled outside properties that had been flooded. We were followed in our recovery efforts and judging by BBC2 Gardeners World. We ended up being awarded Silver Gilt, which Monty Don said 'was nothing short of miraculous!'.
