Since I retired, I have been a regular listener to The Shipping Forecast just before 1.00am at night. I find it very comforting for some reason. For the first time last night, it said, "Humber, fog banks". I never remember hearing this before. We used to live near Bridlington, and I wondered why they never reported the visibility like other stations do. There is a recording , online, of Alan Bennett reading the forecast. I remember ,years ago, the outcry, when they tried to axe "Sailing by" as the introduction.

I still often hear it but not so much in recent years as my profound deafness interferes with most speech but still love "sailing by " might suggest it for when I finally " go"
