One of the gems of BBC programming over the years has been its transatlantic session which brought together top folk musicians in what have been called 'the greatest backporch shows ever':
I have watched these whenever I can; many videos of their performances can be found on YouTube

My anthropology professor at graduate school did her main body of research in Appalachia, the home of some very traditional folk music. She would often play us something, going into detail about the background of the music in terms of how it came to Appalachia from Europe, and about the people who kept these songs alive.
