Well I thoroughly enjoyed that women's 10m diving final. And the surprise Dutch winner must be very popular, I have never seen so many divers and coaches rush to congratulate someone. I don't think the women have to do an armstand dive but one poor girl, I think age 16 from Ukraine, did one but couldn't hold the pose so needed a restart which costs you 2 points per judge.

I have another afternoon of diving scheduled! And the same through to Sunday so housework etc is being shelved. I believe the gymnastics is back on too. Oh no! My TV backlog will be growing.

It was said on DS that the gymnastics won't be shown today. And the commentators said when the women's finished that they would see us again on Saturday.

I’m enjoying the championships and, on the whole, the continuous live coverage let’s you catch up with everything on iPlayer, FFing if you want to and switching to red button or ‘extra’ if you want.
But today they got it badly wrong........
The men’s triathlon started at 4pm. By 4.15 there was still diving on BBC live and golf on the other “live” online channel. By the time they got to the triathlon the swimming AND the transition to bikes was over. This is like televising a decathlon with the first 3 events omitted. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the crossover from one BBC channel to the other took place JUST before the transition from bikes to running, so, in order to make sure we got the credits, the graphics and a wittering-on Gabby Logan we missed all that too. This is like continuing with watching the decathlon and missing the last 50m of a track race. This is not acceptable.

I approve of the new trend for gender-mixed events. The synchronised swimming one I saw was an Argentine tango. it’s hard enough doing that on dry land, let alone in 12 ft of water........great, although the man’s sequinned shorts were probably a mistake, given that he’s supposed to be a gaucho.....

Trackside TV interviewer: “What was that look of consternation on your face as you crossed the line?”
Athlete: “I didn’t win.....”

Well, having watched pretty full coverage of all the diving finals, I am really surprised at how edited down the Mens10m final was, and we had two chaps in it although not Tom Daley and I bet it would have had full coverage if he had been! To me it was more like a random selection of dives than a competition as we didn't see every competitor in each round. I think I only saw two armstand dives in total and everyone has to do one. I am really surprised that this was the competition they cut back on given how spectacular 10m diving is.

Well I thought that was a very successful inaugural event. As someone who doesn't want to watch athletics much and gets fed up with the way everything else gets ignored once they come onstream, I thought the separation of venues worked extremely well. And the other sports certainly get more prime time, main channel coverage than they would if they were in their own. But going forward I assume it will be two different cities so we may not get the level of coverage the cycling etc got because it was in the UK. Also, will it always be that group of other sports? For the sake of the diving coverage, I do hope so.

I imagine TPTB will look at which sports got the high ratings and attendance and decide from there. The golf could get dropped cos it's really difficult to get the top male players with their tight schedule. Same with the tennis.

As l understand it you would need a velodrome, a swimming/diving area, and an athletics stadium, but it doesn't all need to be in the same city.
So there could be a lot of sharing, and could work quite well ,every four year between Olympics.
