A typical glossing over of a big hole in the plotline. And his mother would have put two and two together over how he became a father -- apart from giving him a grilling on who the actual mother was.
They seem to have been able to travel to the palace they're in, without anyone noticing that they have a baby with them. And now they're living there, with several servants responsible for the child, and they're discussing the baby with the ordinary household servants as if his existence is not a secret! If no one comes to assassinate the child it will be a miracle.. ...

Yes I agree and perhaps that will be a plotline. Would've thought the baby would be in a smaller safer house or perhaps living with a servant even in the house. I appreciate they are miles away from Calcutta but the ships arrive every day and some of the servants are from there.
Also he said he would honour his murdered servant and we didn't actually see him do anything at all to actually honour him. Surely there was some service.

This is creaking on....... its like a Victorian melodrama. As there's only one episode left, I will watch to see how it ends but doubt if there'll be any surprises!

I was just wondering because sometimes they sell these series abroad and perhaps it is doing a lot better in other countries. I have wondered if the lack of 'realistic' dialogue and generally unfathomable sequences goes down better in other place............not that I am suggesting we are that sophisticated here but perhaps it lends itself to dubbing more easily.

I have never seen a Bollywood film but beverley's theory about the style maybe being better received in another language made me wonder if it is a Bollywood type production? I have stuck with it but doubt if I will bother to watch another series.

I watched Anita Rani's short series about Bollywood. The impression I got was that Beecham House is very different.

I haven't watched BH but I have watched quite a lot of Bollywood and I don't think it's anything like. I think it's more likely that it's doing well in European countries or America where people have little knowledge of what the Raj was like and what went on in India. So the lack of realistic dialogue wouldn't be so obvious.

It's only being shown in the UK so far, but PBS Masterpiece will be airing it in the US and apparently it will be "streamable" in India later this month.
The production company is London-based Bend It, which as might be guessed produced Bend It Like Beckham, and more recently Viceroy's House which was about the end of British rule in India. So I think it's nothing to do with Bollywood - although that film industry might well have been an influence in the use of lavish sets and costumes.

Well, that ended a bit like a damp squib. The ending seemed hurried as if the writers wanted to get out as soon as possible. But it has left the door open for a second series.
The series looked beautiful but the plot and the dialogue left more than just a little to be desired. If there is a second series lets hope that the Mother is not included.

It must be quite a high budget production, with lots of location work in Jaipur etc. I wouldn't set too much store by the overnight figures in this timeslot, with competition from The Handmaid's Tale and then Poldark as well. The 7-day consolidated figures for the first 2 episodes were around the 4 million mark - still probably too small for renewal if it were just a UK show. I guess it's all going to depend on international audience reaction, so I don't expect a decision until that becomes clear.
Despite its flaws I quite enjoyed it and would happily watch a second series.
