That is being written by LaPlante so might be good. The Police Service was very different in the 70s.

Helen Mirren is a tough act to follow - or even lead.

Can't they think of anything new?

Endeavour, the prequel to Morse, has proved to be very good, largely because of the performances of its two main stars Shaun Evans and Roger Allam, but also of course because of its writing. Colin Dexter, who has always acknowledged the tremendous boost given to his original stories by the TV adaptations, has wisely taken an advisory role on Endeavour (and also I think on Lewis, the other spin-off).
Lynda LaPlante did a great job with Prime Suspect. It's one of the best crime dramas in my opinion and Tennison is a completely credible creation. But then there was the awful Above Suspicion – she was having an off day when she wrote that. I don't know Trial and Retribution well so don't have an opinion of it. Is it any good?
Anyway, prequels can work well if they're well written and well cast with actors you believe could become their later, better known selves.

I like the sound of this. I was a big Prime Suspect fan. I quite like prequels.

They can work .. but I think it's lazy writing .. relying on already established and popular series and characters and just milking them
I think that about musicals like We Will Rock You & Mamma Mia where they take a bunch of already hugely popular songs that have been played to the public for 40 years or so, string them together with a tenuous storyline and hey presto .. a success !!!!!

Big fan of Lynda La Plante until her last couple of books, didn't have the LLP style so suspect ghost written.

I kinda went of LLP when I saw a TV adaptation, where a guy was killing prostitutes by strangling them with their tights.
Now ladies, you all know how bloody difficult tights are to get on and off. Would a prostitute seriously wear tights?

They don't even wear knickers usually.

Not sure where she changed but, for me, her best books were the old "Cold" trilogy, blood, shoulder and heart. About a cop called Lorraine, so good that they haven't been charity shop-ped, or even on mental charity shop list for when I am not feeling so lazy. And the early Anna Travis ones.

Martin Cole is one I can't read. The first one was utterly brilliant, but as I got more of her books, they were just same-old-same-old, with different character names.
