Nathan Fillion’s new ABC drama The Rookie is coming to the UK.
Sky Witness have secured the exclusive UK rights to the procedural after striking a deal with international distributor Entertainment One (eOne). The acquisition underpins Sky’s commitment to spend millions on U.S. procedurals for the recently rebranded channel. A UK premiere date has not yet been set.
The Rookie tells the story of John Nolan (Fillion), the oldest rookie in the LAPD. At an age where most people are at the peak of their career, Nolan casts aside his comfortable, small town life and moves to L.A. to pursue his dream of being a cop. Nolan, surrounded by rookies twenty years his junior, must navigate the dangerous, humorous, and unpredictable world of the streets of L.A. as he makes his second shot at life count.
The drama series, which is inspired by a true story, is produced by eOne and ABC Studios and stars Nathan Fillion (Castle), Melissa O’Neil (Dark Matter), Richard T. Jones (Santa Clarita Diet), Afton Williamson (Shades of Blue), Mercedes Mason (Fear The Walking Dead), Alyssa Diaz (Ray Donovan), Eric Winter (Rosewood) and Titus Makin Jr. (The Path).
The Rookie emerged as a hot title at the LA Screenings and with this deal eOne has now sold the series to broadcasters in more than 160 international territories, including M6 in France; NBCUniversal International Networks across Latin America; RAI in Italy; TNT in Spain; Sony Pictures Television Networks in Portugal, CE and Russia; M-NET in Africa; Three in New Zealand; and COSMOTE TV in Greece.
“The response to this series internationally has been brilliant as evident with these key early sales and a true testament to the quality of the show”, said Stuart Baxter, eOne’s President of International Distribution. “From a global standpoint, The Rookie lends itself to a wide audience, is flexible for the schedule and features Nathan Fillion who brings with him a devoted international fanbase. This is truly a unique show with elements of Hill Street Blues meets Grey’s Anatomy that offers a fresh take on the cop genre.”
The Rookie has the distinction of being only the third new series from the 2018-2019 broadcast season to secure a UK deal, after E4 previously picked up Happy Together and Charmed in a deal with CBS Studios International. It joins For The People, The Good Doctor, Instinct, 9-11, The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair, Grey’s Anatomy, How To Get Away With Murder, Station 19, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Madam Secretary, Blindspot and Chicago Fire on Sky Witness’ slate of first run U.S. scripted series.
