I've watched the first two - I am trying to pace myself - brilliant though.
Have I just missed it, there doesn't seem to be a lot of promotion for this series.

You should seek the King's permission. For once.

Big changes from the books, but you have to go with the flow.

I see Alfred's brother is still a conniving, back-stabbing so and so, isn't he? But why does Alfred's wife look so ill?

It's his nephew and a I should have been King scenario as his father was the King. Hence the raging jealousy. It all comes to blows in the end (historically that is - I have no idea what they will do in the series, but Cornwell is relatively factual about actual people we know the history of). Mind you he's played with Uhtred's age, I think he loses about 10 years throughout the books!

Nephew, that's it!
Cornwell has played with the character of the King of Mercia, hasn't he? From the little I've read, he was quite a good King and not the whiny little psycopath we see.

He certainly has, there is no historical evidence that he was a cruel man, but he did try to divorce Aethelflaed and they did live separately. They only have one child a daughter and reading between the lines, that as far as it went and either by design (e.g. keeping things in Wessex) or simply because she wasn't putting herself through another pregnancy, this was no love match. She seems to have been more popular with the people but there is nothing to suggest he was like he is in the film. Mind you, Alfred was not the character Cornwell writes about either.

Edward on the other hand was probably the most conniving and politically astute of the bunch. I think it is him who either has his daughters in convents or married abroad so that the line and chance or rebellion goes directly through his sons, Athelstan through his first marriage/liaison (who agrees not to marry in favour of his younger brothers) through to the sons on third marriage.
Athelstan was a good King. He will be in The Last Kingdom soon I would think if they do Series 4 - he'll be one of the babies Edward just had.

Great interviews here, with a lot of the cast, at London Comic Com - I was amazed at seeing 'Aelswith', without the costume/makeup...

Just managed to finish this, Christmas and work got in the way. Excellent, major changes from the books and although somd were a bit implausible if you took the time to think. However it did work and Series 4 has been commissioned.
