This is an Emma Rice (Brief Encounter) production of a book by Angela Carter (apparently, never read it myself). If you like colour blind and gender blind casting, varying over the age of the character, this is the show for you! It was a bit hard to keep up at times. This is the story of 75 year old twins Nora and Dora Chance, daughters of a 100 year old actor father, and looks back on their lives. It was a delight and very funny. After several shows where the audience has been packed with school parties , it was a notably older audience at yesterday's matinée and there was a lack of buzz, but at the end it got terrific applause.
Nora was played by a young French actress as a teen, by a very tall, thin black man as a showgirl in her 20s and by a small white actress in her older years. Dora was played by 2 actresses and then a man in her old age. Like Brief Encounter, the children were played by puppets, yay!!!! I don't think it runs for all that long but as with Brief Encounter it may play elsewhere and it is well worth a visit. Some swearing and sex but generally just warm hearted.
