'The Interrogation Of Tony Martin' will premiere on Channel 4 on Sunday November 18th at 9pm, it has been announced.
The Interrogation Of Tony Martin explores the “missing part” of the story of Tony Jordan, who was sentenced to life after shooting dead 16 year old burglar Fred Barras in 1999. It charts the three days of police questioning following Martin’s arrest for shooting two burglars who broke into his farmhouse in 1999. At his trial Martin argued he had used reasonable force to defend himself and his property. His conviction provoked public outcry and the case became a national cause celebre.
The one-off factual drama stars Steve Pemberton, Daniel Mays and Stuart Graham. The Interrogation Of Tony Martin was penned and directed by David Nath, the award winner behind The Murder Detectives and The Watchman.

Remind me please, prof, is he still serving his sentence, or did he win an appeal ...

He appealed and the sentence was reduced from murder to manslaughter where he got 5yrs, he served 3yrs and was released in 2003 after previously being denied parole.

I really don't know how to feel about this.
I remember when it happened, I was discussing it with my now-ex and I said something along the lines of him protecting what was his. Paul asked if I agreed with the death penalty for burglary. I looked at him, shocked, and he reminded me that Barrass was shot in the back. And that did change my view on it.
And watching the real Tony Martin at the end... I don't know. The killing of a burglar seems to have given him his manhood back. But at the cost of someone's life.
The whole thing is just uncomfortable.

I remember the arrest, and the whole hoo-ha, but as always, we were never given the true picture at the time. I'll have to try to find this on catch up.

I remember the case, and the huge discussions which it started about whether an ordinary householder was entitled to use force to protect his/her property.
I remember thinking then that I would have shot whoever came into my house, although I like to think that I would shout a warning first. I'm pretty sure that if this had happened in the USA, there would have been no criminal charge: they're stronger on defence of your property, and of course most Americans are armed in some States.
A small point was revealed during this dramatisation, which was not common knowledge at the time, and this was that Tony Martin had been abused as a youngster. This had altered his character and made him someone who preferred to be a recluse. Definitely someone more likely to fiercely guard his privacy.
EDIT:: I nearly forgot to say, that this dramatisation was excellent. Well acted by all, and I liked the fact that instead of it being an entire play, it just concentrated on his interrogations following the murder and was only an hour long

The thing is though.... he didn't call out a warning, he lied about being on the stairs and he shot the kid in the back.
I agree about America but hopefully we won't ever be that way.

He must have been damn frightened, though. He had no idea how many of them there were, he had been burgled twice already that year, he was living out in the wilds and knew that the Police might take an hour to get there, and he knew that they were bold enough to break in even though they knew he was at home. I do agree that it will be a terrible place if we ever copy the USA and most people feel they have to be armed.

I thought this was very well done. On paper, at the time, it seemed to me he should have been done for manslaughter at most, not murder. I would be terrified alone in the dark with goodness knows how many people downstairs. And if you try to challenge them you could be seriously hurt. But I did think this showed how he must have come over to the police and probably the jury. Most of us wouldn't have a handy rifle under the bed of course. Wasn't there a subsequent case where a homeowner killed an intruder in his attic and he was not put on trial?

I think it was also that he had laid traps for potential burglars so that they couldn't get away etc. Wasn't it that he had removed some steps from his stairs and things like that, which was why one of them broke his leg. Terrible situation to be in for any person. It is bad enough when you are on your own and you hear a sound and you daren't breath when you know you have your mobile and can phone the police. Sometimes the dog used to give me such a fright. So I can slightly understand how he felt and have a lot of sympathy but the burglars were running away. I think it is very difficult.

It’s impossible to say how anyone would react in a situation like that but very few of us could pick up a gun. We have a baseball bat in the corner but who knows if either of us would be able to actually hit someone with it.

A baseball bat in the corner of your room is actually classed as a weapon that you have planned to use unless you play baseball. Better to have a handy implement that could be used in a normal house or hang the bat on the wall next to a print of your favourite team. This way it is classed as spur of the moment in order to defend yourself but otherwise it is considered to be a weapon you plan to use in the eventuality. Which is why Martin got 3 years.

My son plays baseball and brought it back from the States. What excuse would I have for keeping a wooden rolling pin in the bedroom?
