It ended as it began, with an episode - a specially long one - full of misery. I thought it descended into melodrama towards the end, the tension being ramped up by the oft-used device of someone not answering their phone at a critical time because they're too busy at work. As has been the case throughout, much of the dialogue was improvised and took ages to get anywhere.
Performances were good, especially by Stephen Graham and Niamh Algar (Dinah), and some are raving about the series and describing it as a masterpiece. Speaking personally though, on balance I wish I hadn't bothered with it.

{SPOILER:Click to Show (in case anyone hasnt seen the finale yet)}Joseph was raped aged 9 when in the institution in Ireland - not by any of the staff, but by two older boys - brothers - who were also housed there. His memory of this had been repressed but re-surfaced after he visited the now-derelict building. He got Craig (the man who works for the brother-in-law, who had also been at that institution, and it turns out had also been abused by the same boys) to tell him where the surviving one of the two brothers now lives. Joseph went there with the intention to kill him - but finding him bedridden, and learning he himself had been abused from an early age, stopped short of doing that.
Craig hanged himself.
Dinah, the sister-in-law, had a son at age 15 which was removed and given to adoption. Her mother was instrumental in this happening, believing it was best for both her daughter and the child. Dinah had tried to stay in touch and had written to the boy; unknown to her he had written back but Dinah's mother intercepted the letters. She never told Dinah, and lied to both her and Social Services in order to make sure mother and son had no contact. Dinah was devastated to learn this, visited her mother to have it out and ended up killing her.

Thanks for that, so not a barrel of laughs then.
Might pick it up when it gets a repeat.
