The Virtues will premiere on Wednesday May 15th at 9pm.
"The Virtues tells the story of Joseph, a barely on-the-wagon alcoholic whose precarious reality is knocked for six when his ex-partner moves abroad with their young son, from Liverpool to Australia, for a better life. With no immediate family to live for, Joseph is haunted by a past he has tried, for decades, to forget – if not actively obscure with drink and drugs.
Suffering the hangover from hell – the dry spell over – he walks away from his present life and boards a boat bound for Ireland to confront hazy, fear-inducing memories from a childhood spent in the care system that he’s had to forget."
The four part drama, was wrtten by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne, with Meadows also directing and stars Stephen Graham, Helen Behan, Frank Laverty, Mark O’Halloran and Niamh Algar.

Stephen Graham is on a roll at the moment, I like him in everything I’ve seen him in.

I'll give it a go as Stephen Graham is always on top form. And Shane Meadows is writing and directing so another good reason, although his stuff can be bleak he's very good.

From what l have read , and this programme has even been advertised on ITV which doesn't happened often, it is being billed as must see tv.
So will.

And did.
Watching someone get happy drunk, waking up on the floor, covered in sick, may not sound riveting viewing ,but this is good stuff.
There are lot of silences, covering of tracks ,making up stories,a bit of lighter stuff,(with Sinbad at the ferry terminal), it just goes along at its own pace.
You really want to know what happens next and soon.

This was so good. Stephen Graham is amazing in the role, it's quite depressing really, and I did feel sorry for him when he was speaking to his son and said it was alright for him to call his step-father 'dad'. I'm intrigued as to what's happened in his past. It seems like he's been through something emotional as a youngster.

He did. His mother was killed for being an RUC informant and he had to go to Liverpool where he was adopted by..... Oh hang on.

Well, this is a barrel of laughs. While Stephen Graham's performance may be good, it had me utterly depressed. Also the episode was overly drawn out I thought - hope there's a bit more plot development next week.

I agree GMan, I too found it depressing. Although I like Shane Meadows and Stephen Graham, I don't think I'll continue with this.

The first episode was too bleak for me. I, somehow, got to the end, but am really not sure I want to go further.

Right, second episode, god it did drag on as if they said just witter on about anything ,we won't bother with a script.
Really disappointed now,as it had such a good start.
I hardly ever bail out and as there are only 2 to go ,will probably stay to the end,if nothing better to do.
But it was not impressive.

The second episode was less depressing than the first - but just as drawn out. For the first 5 minutes we watched Stephen Graham walking, often in rain and/or slow motion, interspersed with flashback scenes from his childhood and accompanied by an earnest and rather jangly song. The next 5 minutes he spent inarticulately failing to tell his sister who he was - but giving her signs and gestures, like a round of 'Give Us a Clue', until she finally guessed. I don't know why he couldn't just come out with it in 5 seconds, but at least it gave us time for some more childhood flashbacks. If you subtract the time for advert breaks, at this point about a quarter of the episode running time had been used up. I like a slow burner, but there are limits!
Having said that, the rest of it was not without interest. It's just about retained me for another episode.
