Eddie Mair and Kirsty Young have been voted the UK's favourite radio voices in a poll conducted by Radio Times. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36881932Just a question because I live way up north. Are there others outside the BBC with a national presence that would really enable them to compete?

I would have voted for Paul Miller from BBC Radio in the South. I would never condone anyone from Radio 4.

Why ever not? I know the Today programme annoys a lot of people, but Eddie and Kirsty don't appear on that. The poll seems to support the idea that northern voices are considered warmer and friendlier. My bank has two call centres, in Leeds and Hamilton (near Glasgow) for that reason. Scottish accents are often considered classless, which they're not, of course, they vary as much as English ones do, but are less immediately recognisable to those south of the border.

While I like Eddie Mair's voice, I find Kirsty Young"s smooth monotone annoying. Not so bad when I can see her, she is presentable.

Cathy Clugston for me; no stretched vowels there.
Lyse Doucet, anyone?

I find Ken Bruce's voice to be very pleasing.
