I think there are several Dreams on this year. This is the one starring Gwendoline Christie as Hyppolita and a role reversed Titania speaking Oberon's lines. It is an immersive production as was the amazing version of Julius Caesar last year. There were loads of groundlings yesterday, mainly schoolchildren.
Now this was good but I dont think we gained much from the role reversal except for when Oberon gets off with Bottom. This got plenty of the groundlings going! They also quite liked the young couples kissing. Personally I thought they threw so much at it that it was easy to get distracted by the constant movement. We had aerial displays like sub-Cirque de Soleil, a bit of pole-style dancing round the beds, some rock music, bits of stage popping up all the time, flying beds, Oberon and Bottom in a bubble bath, some Handmaids Tale Martha costumes, Puck interacting with the groundlings. At one point I realised I hadnt been listening to the speaker but paying attention to the cavorting nearest to me!
Unusually, IMHO, The Rude Mechanicals were hilarious and the chap playing Bottom was very good indeed. So I would say close but no cigar, but maybe after Julius Caesar I was expecting too much and this was just a bit too busy for me. Interesting new approach though and lots of laughs.
It runs until 31 August.
