Firstly, I will say take note of the question mark. This is news that is being reported in newspapers, including the Guardian; it is being reported as almost a certainty. The original source seems to be the Mail reporting what was told to them by an industry insider. While Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role as James Bond in the next film, the franchise is set for a shake-up, with reports claiming that black British actor Lashana Lynch has been cast as 007 – taking over Bond’s secret agent number after his character leaves M16. -- Allegedly Bond's number is up: black female actor 'is the new 007'Twitter seems to be treating it as a fact.

Judging from all the 'gammon snowflakes' on Twitter, there's a fair amount of raised blood pressure!
Some of the threads have been quite funny. Especially the ones who didn't read the article properly and confused 007 with James Bond as the same thing.

The idea is not completely new. In some of the more recent (non Fleming) books, 004 was Scarlett Papava, who took over from Frederick Wardner. However, it seems to many that 007 is special; a bit like when a great sportsman retires, so should 007 be retired with James Bond. I disagree. Interestingly, in Moonraker, Fleming had 00 agents retire at 45, when they would be replaced.

Well 45 is about the time when jumping on and off the roof of moving train, sking down avalanches and parachuting into volcanoes becomes a bit more tricky!!!

Given the amount Fleming's 007 drank and smoke, leaving aside the risky nature of his job, it's amazing any of them made it to 45! I don't remember any of Fleming's 00s being female but it's a very long time since I read them and I'm not likely to do so again now!I haven't seen any of the recent films – does he still smoke?
