It'll take a lot to top the film of Les Mis, but I'm willing to give it a go. I enjoyed the live version of Cats.

On Saturday Review on R4 last night they reviewed Cats, and roundly condemned it. Presenter Tom Sutcliffe, who I like, tried hard to find good points – the musical ran for over 20 years in London and is still running in parts of the world, and he personally loved it on stage though he didn't like the film, but the guests were not having it. One of their criticisms was that there is no plot, which is surely well known about this show. They were not willing to take on board a different art form which to me is pretty poor criticism. I saw it on stage too and much preferred it to Phantom of the Opera, precisely because it's different and is really a dance show rather than a traditional musical.

With regards to critics who site lack of plot.
It's a story about an evening in the lives of a group of feral cats living in junkyard or back alley. How much more can you do with that?
If TS Eliot or Andrew Lloyd Webber tried to introduce much more plot critics would have lambasted them for over anthropomorphizing the cats like a Disney cartoon.

My much awaited copy of the DVD finally arrived, on the day of its release, and I made Mr Delia sit down and watch it with me the same night. Wonderful. He enjoyed it, too. (Edit - he had not watched it before, as I saw it in the cinema with a friend)
Why it was so condemned by the critics, I'll never know. But they have deprived a lot of people of the pleasure of this film. I shall be interested to see what folks make of it, the day it's finally shown on TV.
