That's one of the misnomers about life in the US. People think that if you are poor or have no insurance you would not have access to hospital treatment. You do.
However it is going to be at places like Bellevue or County General and their satellite free clinics scattered around in neighborhoods. Waiting rooms with hundreds of people waiting their turn. And the possibility of a shootout at any given moment.
And that is the basic theme of New Amsterdam is that this new, forward thinking, millennial minded guy is a saint riding in to turn the reputation of Bellevue around and make more like a top line university hospital.
I guess you could say that Northwestern Memorial for example is more like the hospital depicted in "House" where you have a team of expert doctors using the latest in equipment and diagnostics to treat a single patient in a private room.

Right you are Dame!
Ironic that such a pleasant sounding name is attached to such a fierce maximum security pen!

I had to laugh. About 15 minutes after I posted that message, it was mentioned on Law & Order. Surprise, Surprise!

Hey, don't forget Sing Sing. Whenever I went down to New York, on the Hudson Valley railway line, we would always go past Sing Sing. It was an odd feeling.

I quite liked the first episode, but gave up in the middle of the second because of the absolutely ridiculous drums and cymbals banging away in the background for no apparent reason. House was much better, with a more interesting storyline.

I didn't like House, but it was definitely better.

House was definitely a series that put a lot of focus on the science of medicine. Their consultant staff must have been chock full of top doctors from every field to get the specifics correct in the writing.
New Amsterdam more of a melodrama set in hospital but could almost as easily be set in a hotel or a casino or some other large venue with lots of staff and temporary guests.

Every time I see the name "New Amsterdam" it reminds me of "The Wire" - series 3 I think it was
In that series, the police chief, completely frustrated at conventional attempts to keep street crime in his jurisdiction down, went around meeting with the gang bangers, junkies, prostitutes and said that he was making a small section of the neighborhood (which was full of abandoned apartment blocks, store fronts and factories) a neutral zone, which he named "New Amsterdam" (mistakenly called "Hamsterdam by many of the hoods) and where the baddies could go and carry on with all their vices and the police would leave them alone. No arrests. They could sell their drugs there, use their drugs there, sell their bodies there and fight there to their hearts content. The authorities would stay out except for the fire brigage and paramedic units if the need arose.
BUT, if they stepped out of New Amsterdam and did any criminal activity in the rest of the neighborhood they would come down on them extra hard.
Suddenly crime numbers in that area dropped to almost nil. And the big bosses at city hall were left scratching their heads, yet happy at the results.
Novel idea!
