It was dealing with war casualties all through the German invasion of France. After the fall of Paris, it was allowed to continue its work, and further, allowed them to visit the camps where prisoners of war were kept. Though they had to be very careful, appearing neutral, they arranged for some of the soldiers to get forged papers, and n some cases, put through paperwork that some of the soldiers, especially Jews, had died, allowing them to escape. The Germanseven allowed the hospital to be run with American doctors after Germany declared war on America.
The Americans were eventually imprisoned when Germans in America were interned in 1942.

Here we go - there was a pundit this week suggesting that the best way to end this is for all the young people to die - almost a Blackadder type ending.
I don't know how I feel about that, I could certainly see the revelance especially with it being Remembrance Sunday. Is it based on a book? I also wondered as they are only a couple of years into the war whether they might not leave it for a potential second series in which case they couldn't all die, or could they.

Well, I'm afraid I found the finale toe-curlingly awful. It was a concentration of everything I've disliked about this series, with just a couple of dashes of the good stuff.
Its return was announced. I don't think I'll be bothering with series 2.

Well all the main leads survived, which was unlikely considering one was guilty of assassinating German soldiers. The US doctor continues to endanger everyone around him by being openly gay in 1940s Paris. The US journalist has amazingly never once been asked to leave or even been seriously questioned. Nobody seems at all concerned that the singer (not a very good singer) has had an illegitimate baby, not even ENSA or any of the RAF pilots. And apparently you could take your new born baby for a walk in its pram around the airfield with clearly no security concerns whatsoever.
I suspect they had a couple of endings done just in case they got a renewed contract. So they spent the episode reuniting people and setting up the next series.
They are still in 1940, so they have plenty of scope for next time. It wasn't brilliant and quite contrived at times with lots of cliches and nods to 21st century tick box characters. It did move along ok and at least you could hear it and they had the lights on in every scene. I didn't mind it in the end, I learnt things, it covered the invasion of Poland and not a lot has been done on that outside of the Jewish angle.
There were some excellent action sequences and the characters did develop as it went along even if some of their plotlines were stretching it a bit.

Is it the head doctor that is gay, or one of his assistants?

I don't know if he is the head doctor because he is the only doctor we have seen really, but he is gay.

For anybody who is interested, this is a history of the American Hospital of Paris during the two World Wars: THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL OF PARIS DURING THE TWO WORLD WARS:Reading it, you will understand that the doctors at the American Hospital were doing NOTHING that would draw unwanted attention to themselves.

Thank you CB...
Under the heading of 'Am I Reading Too Much Into This'... the American journalist has a son, is that what she said last night? The doctor is supposed to be her nephew? Do we take it that he actually is the son but doesn't know it?
Or is that idea the writer's trick to really confuse us?

I wasn't sure whether she was just saying that to the German. Perhaps he is the child of the rape she mentioned and he doesn't know.

Peter Bowker apparently revealed to Radio Times that he has many seasons planned, saying: "I know what happens over six series for the main characters. To get my attention back, they will have to change many things.
