This is a very funny play about the murder of Alexander Litvinenko. I have to say that despite the good reviews I was dubious that it would work, not being an inherently funny topic, but it does. It is quite wide ranging, going back to his days as an incorruptible FSB officer and dishing the dirt on Putin. Luckily, it is grounded by his widow, Marina, who has some quite poignant lines at the end. Marina is played by MyAnna Buring (Miss Susan from Ripper Street) and I was pleasantly surprised by her performance. Alexander was played by Tom Brooke whom I have seen in things but can't remember what! He was OK but not memorable. Reece Shearsmith was Putin and Peter Polycarpou played Boris Bereszovsky.
It went down very well with the Old Vic audience especially when Putin says "Criminal? The only thing criminal here is having to pay £4 for a.programme and go outside to have a piss". as the OV loos are being rebuilt.
It was written by Lucy Prebble who wrote Enron, which coincidentally I am going to see by the Putney Players next week!
