John Humphrys has bowed out as a presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme with a swipe at both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn for refusing to be interviewed on the show.
In his final programme after a 32-year stint presenting Today, Humphrys complained that top politicians were now shying away from tough scrutiny by broadcasters.
I am not sure what he expects; politicians are discovering the power of social media, enabling them to avoid media scrutiny. The fourth estate is being sidelined, just as attempts are being made to sideline parliament. I would have thought that it might have been a good idea to stay on the job for a bit longer to see Brexit through, and not have gone out with interviews with Tony Blair and David Cameron.
Maybe it was the right thing to do, to leave the airwaves behind and do some gardening.
In America, Trump ally, and ex campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski told Congress yesterday or the day before that there is no political duty to tell the truth to the media, which was very depressing, it seems that our prime minister is beginning to think this way; we really need strong broadcasters to deal with this. If they won't speak to you, do the research.

I went off him a while back when he commented about fellow presenters wages. Is he ditching Mastermind too?

I went off the Today program about 20 or so years ago, mainly because of him and the way he shouts at people. I realised it was stressing me at the start of my day and I didn’t need it. So I switched to Radio 2 and never looked back! So I won’t miss him. I wish him a happy retirement.

I can't imagine we've heard the last of him, but presenting Today is gruelling and he's been dropping heavy hints for a while that he was going to step down. James Naughtie left the programme a while ago and now does special reports, goes to conferences and so on, as well as the focus on books that was his stated reason for moving on.
I can't say I will miss him. His aggressive interviewing style, very like that of Jeremy Paxman, was of its time and I prefer the current set of presenters. I must say that Nick Robinson, of whom I initially thought 'jobs for the boys', has turned out to be an excellent interviewer.
John's final programme was very indulgent but there were a couple of gems His reporting of the Aberfan disaster was genuinely moving.
