One of my local repeat channels that runs Perry Mason in repeats Monday through Friday had a teaser that Wednesday night's episode is the infamous episode where Perry actually - gasp - loses a case!
When the series ended after 9 series and 271 episodes Mr. Mason's record was a stellar 270-1.
Things were different back in the 1950's and 60s. People more likely to suspend disbelief. Find it plausible that a defense attorney would only attract innocent clients (Perry Mason would never help anyone get away with murder), took every case to trial and never did a plea bargain (why do a plea bargain when the client is innocent?) and won all but 1 lone case out of nearly 300 (how did poor old Hamilton Burger keep his job as District Attorney?)
Its been a long time since I've seen the episode where he loses. With 271 episodes it takes a long time to work through the cycle, even with 5 airings a week!
I still love the old shows. The men all wear business suits everywhere they go, the movies, baseball games, the barber shop, out fishing, even though its probably close to 100 degrees in Los Angeles and Raymond Burr whilst a lovely man is a portly fellow. The women all wear hats, gloves, uncomfortable looking dresses. People drive incredibly large cars and everyone chain smokes no matter where they are.
Perry Mason's secretary Della Street appears to work 24 hours a day 7 days a week too. Always lovely and freshly scrubbed, even if he phones her in the middle of the night. And of course she never quibbled whether he asked her to prepare a very complex legal document or make a pot of coffee and some sandwiches.
