This is the musical set around the events of 9/11. It is based in the small town of Gander on NewFoundland, pop 9000, which had to accommodate around 7000 passengers from all the various aeroplanes which were diverted there (as apparently that is the plan) whilst Us airspace was closed. Well what a wonderful bunch they were too! If you want heartwarming but not mawkish, this is the show for you. The cast of 12 represent all these people, plus an onstage folk band. I had read and heard quite a lot about it before I went but didnt quite see how it would work. Very well is the answer! It is quite funny and the characters really do make their mark.
I did find the sound a bit poor at times and couldn't catch all the words, which some of the others found too. I was also surprised at how Irish they all sounded! I expected them all to sound like George Crabtree from Murdoch Mysteries. But given how much the community is invested in the show, and that this is most probably the only show in the past or future of the West End to ever shine such a light on NewFoundland, I would imagine the dialect coach would have been pretty hot.
The audience just erupted at the end, a big fat standing O. I could barely breathe as I had completely welled up by then and didn't want to start crying. Really very good.

I wondered what this was about! It was an answer in a quiz and I couldn't work it out from the title. Although it is obvious when you know. It got a lot of awards this year, didn't it?

That sounds like a fascinating story. I was not even aware that such an event really happened must have been quite an undertaking to turn it into a musical without being maudlin.
I looked at the song list and the titles show it takes a very logical progression. I will keep an eye out for a touring company of this one for sure!
For whatever reason I never watch the Tony awards and only find out about plays and musicals years later.

Oh yes, I meant to include that! It won four Olivier awards including Best New Musical. If it does come on a tour nearby, it is definitely worth a look. I hope the airlines gave them a shedload of money for their trouble; they didnt want to take anything from the passengers. You know what airlines are like too, they keep you on-board for hours with no information. So a lot of the passengers got drunk! That was funny.

I always thought Canada closed her airspace that day too because of the close proximity to the US and worry about more hijacked flights. In reading now I see Canada remained open until all diverted flights had landed and then closed her airspace. That is a pretty self-less act. Our thanks to the Commonwealth!
