As far as American songwriters go you could say Woody Guthrie was the John Lennon of his day. Writing socially conscious, introspective songs and songs of protest and a search for justice.
Stephen Foster was more the Paul McCartney of his time and tended to favor lovely ballads and songs of romance and melancholy loss.
Foster has always been one of my favorite songwriters and I play and sing a lot of his songs on guitar.
It's very interesting to note that even though Foster wrote a lot of songs that are considered anthems of the Deep South, he was a yankee northerner and only made a few very brief visits to the south his entire life. A life that was very brief as he died at 37.
This is a lovely rendition of my favorite Foster song 'Gentle Annie' and its performed by a young woman making a home youtube recording.
This is EXACTLY how folk music is meant to be performed. By folk.
