There are certain albums heralded by critics and friends as masterpieces.
Often times these albums are polarizing and there have been times we all took a listen and either came away in agreement of their greatness or scratching our head and wondering what all the fuss was about.
I'll start with one - "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys.
I agree with the critics that it's a masterpiece. However I have friends - friends whose opinions I value a lot - who find the album a bleak, over-rated, pile of self-indulgent, melodramatic rubbish.
I am a huge Beach Boys fan. But I never a real fan of the songs about the beach, sun, surfing or hot rod cars.
I love Brian Wilson's more introspective melancholy songs about love and loss and feeling like an awkward outsider who isnt sure where they fit in this world and 'Pet Sounds' is Brian at his darkest. My favorites are 'Caroline No', 'You Stiill Believe in Me' and 'I Just Wasn't Made for these Times'.
Even the albums most 'upbeat' song "Wouldnt it be Nice" is a song about what the singer would like in his life but is blocked from having by moral conventions.
The one song that doesn't really fit on the album In my opinion is "Sloop John B." Its not an original composition and just doesn't fit on what is otherwise a concept album.
I know it was released years earlier but "In my Room" would have fit perfectly on 'Pet Sounds'.
What are some masterpieces or emperors new clothes albums for you?
