I remember seeing this many years ago when it first came out and it was a totally hysterical farce about the staging of a farce by a touring company. The cast were amazing and the timing absolutely bang on. It may have been at the National, not sure. I think there have been various productions and tours since.
This revival is at the Garrick theatre and is very good indeed. I didn't laugh as much this time round but I think that was simply because it had lost its novelty value. I had never seen anything quite like it the first time, especially the second act which takes place backstage whilst you can see/hear the show being performed onstage. Our show seemed to be packed, with huge queues outside, and may be the destination show for half term trips or school parties.
Anyhoo, this runs until January 4 and the above titles star is Meera Syal. It also features Lloyd Owen, Sarah Hadland, Daniel Rigby (best thing in it) and Lisa Mcgrillis who was the dumb girlfriend in Mum. Everyone was very good indeed and the diction..... clear as a bell! Bravo for that.
The audience really enjoyed it as did I although a couple of our group didn't rate it that much, one feeling it was not as good as Brian Rix. Personally I never really liked Brian Rix, but I did like this.
