Probably my favorite old time radio comedy series, the Great Gildersleeve was a spin-off of the long-running Fibber McGee & Molly program.
The plot revolved around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve (played by Harold Perry and years later by Willard Waterman who was both a sound-alike and look alike), a jolly and portly, albeit somewhat pompous bachelor who owned and operated a women's girdle factory.
After his brother and sister-in-law are killed in an accident, Gildersleeve sells the factory and moves to the fictional town of Summerfield to oversee his late brothers modest home and act as foster parent to his teenage niece Marjorie and adolescent nephew Leroy who call him "Uncle Mort".
Gildersleeve's main foil is Judge Hooker, the family court judge who is overseeing the arrangement and who always refers to Gildersleeve as "Gildy" much to his chagrin.
Eventually Gildy and judge hooker become friends and his new foil is his stuffy neighbor Bullard.
Gildersleeve also has a number of girlfriends but is always gun shy about getting married, much to the disappointment of these designing women.
Its a very funny show with lots of charm and belly laughs.
