Well I say UK tour but it is the most sporadic version of a tour I have ever seen and after this week at Richmond it returns to 2 other venues for a week each in March-ish.
I have been wanting to see this ever since prof mentioned it ages ago and finally it landed here. Not with the stellar cast prof saw but not too shabby. I only recognised the names of Summer Strallen and Bo someone who was in Miranda. Sadly for them the theatre was barely 1/3 full, if that.
This is a short comedy (90minutes but they put in an interval rather than running straight through) about a dinner party hosted by a liberal couple where the guest (wife's brother) announces his soon to be born son will be called Adolphe. Cue general breakdown of civilised dinner party behaviour at the thought of him naming baby after a dictator and refusing to acknowledge the difference from Adolf. The couple's unseen children are called Gooseberry and Apollinaire, which I think we all enjoyed more than Adolphe! Everyone in turn is subject to much personal criticism.
I found it very funny. The audience gave it a good reception, despite being few in number. Of the cast the men rather stole the honours for the best lines and the best delivery, not to mention most audible. Summer Strallen was pretty good as the pregnant Anna but the liberal wife was rather hard to hear at times. I enjoyed it though, and it was much better than last week's offering, The Night Watch. That was pretty tedious but it was at the end of its tour so I didn't do a write up.
PS. The one fault I found was that the liberal couple lived in Peckham. They would, of course, live in North London. (Only joking if anyone lives in North London!)
