The Saint was a long running U.S. radio program based on the Simon Templar character created by British novelist Leslie Charteris.
Several different actors played Simon Templar but Vincent Price played the role the longest and was the most popular.

The TV show with Roger Moore was very popular in the US as well.
One of the few British TV series ever picked up and run during prime-time by one of the 4 major US networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX), The Avengers being another.
PBS, cable networks and local repeat stations usually run British programmes.
The terrestrial commercial networks prefer to do remakes of British programmes. That way they get to keep all the revenue for first run, repeats, DVD boxed sets etc.
All in the Family (Till Death us do Part), Sanford & Son (Steptoe & Son), Threes Company (A Man about the House) being three hugely popular examples.
