Miss Scarlet And The Duke follows Eliza Scarlet who, after her father dies, is left penniless in a time where marriage is her only option for financial security. But the headstrong Eliza is determined to find another way. Luckily, she has an ace up her bonnet – her father’s business – a private detective agency.
Eliza knows all the tricks of the trade but as a genteel 19th century lady she’s never been allowed to put them into practice. To operate in this man’s world, she needs a partner. Step forward Detective Inspector William Wellington of Scotland Yard, who is also known as “The Duke;” drinker, gambler and womaniser.
Eliza and The Duke strike up a mismatched, fiery relationship that will crackle and smoulder with sexual tension as they team up to solve crime in the murkiest depths of 1880’s London.
The six episode drama series, which was originally commissioned by A+E Networks International back in March, stars Kate Phillips (The Crown), Stuart Martin (Jamestown), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), Andrew Gower (Outlander), Ansu Kabia (Murder On The Orient Express), Helen Norton (Raw), Cathy Belton (Red Rock) and Danny Midwinter (From Hell).
No word on a premiere date.

Sounds like Moonlighting meets John Wayne meets Gone with the Wind.

'Crackle and smoulder with sexual tension'...... I think I'll be the judge of that, thank you very much!

Still give it go though even though the trailers aren't convincing

I watched the first episode, and don't quite know what to make of it. It looks fairly authentic for Victorian London, although for me it had an Irish feel to it (perhaps not surprising as it was filmed in Dublin). Less authentic is how Miss Scarlet goes about her investigating as a lone single lady in a man's world, but as that's the whole premise of the series I guess we have to go along with it.
It's difficult to see what's going on in some of the interior scenes. Either they're simply under-lit, so you're peering into the gloom trying to make things out, or patches are dazzlingly lit by say shafts of sunlight, so the intense contrast renders less illuminated parts of the scene invisible.
As entertainment it's not bad. I'll carry on with it.

Less "gloom" in episode 2, which was better I thought. Still highly unlikely, but entertaining - the RT description of it as preposterous but fun is about right.
RT write-up for next week refers to romantic tension between the two leads crackling away - it needs to start crackling soon, because I haven't noticed any so far.

It continued to be far-fetched but entertaining to the end. I'd watch another series.

Series 2 starts on Alibi next Tuesday, 14th. June.
S1 got to the Drama channel eventually. If S2 does, perhaps it will be in less than the 18 months it took for S1...

S2 hasn't been on an FTA channel yet, only Alibi.
The first series was billed as a UK/Ireland production, filmed in Ireland. Now seems to be a PBS-led American production, filmed in Serbia. I could be wrong, but my view is the chances of it getting to an FTA channel here have receded.

Bum. I really enjoyed it. Is Alibi a Sky channel?
