A thread for discussing the types of games people play. I am what might be called a moderate game player, in that I like more serious gaming, but I am not tied to my computer because of it. Though I am pretty flexible in what I will play, I will play anything from Sudoku and Solitaire, at one end, through Chicken Invaders, to more serious role playing games (RPGs) at the other, in particular the open world RPGs created by Bethesda Softworks in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. Not only do these two, allow me to create the characters that I like, they also allow me to explore the game-play world without having to worry about following what might be the main game-play line of the game, and I can if I want, create my own game-play. Sometimes I play the games, just to listen to the music which, in the case of these two series which, though very different, I really like: Skyrim, Oblivion, MorrowindFallout 3 Playlist, Fallout 4Don't tell TCR

I tend to just play very simple games. I know that if I got into RPGs I would be lost for days.

I tend to just play very simple games. I know that if I got into RPGs I would be lost for days. That's what happened to me when I started playing Morrowind, I took the wrong road out of Seyda Neen on the way to Balmora, and stubbornly spent hours of game play trying to find my way back on track. I ended up going to a tavern, and got myself utterly drunk.

My main interest is mystery/adventure games - many years ago I bought my first PC with a CD-ROM purely so I could play Myst and The 7th Guest. Sadly, this isn't a popular genre of game, so it's getting harder to find good ones.
Otherwise, I've recently broken my Candy Crush addiction and I go through binges of Scrabble on FB.

I first found the game Quake when I first got a PC, but updates meant I could no longer play it ... I have now found a retro website and can download up dated games from there ... Other than that, I like simple games too, though I have tried the RPG games my reflexes aren't fast enough any more!

I remember being briefly interested in Second Life - is that what it was called? But then I saw an online review which said you could be propositioned even in the practise area and, as a person very new to the internet, that scared me!
People made a living on that sometimes didn't they? I remember that a very successful person, who 'made' stuff for people to put in their houses, was 'assasinated' and lost all their stuff. I'm ashamed to say I found that slightly amusing. (I hope the Host was able to resurrect him.)

It HAS to be an established game where the only interactions are in the game-play and you cannot do any of the things that you describe. Now, for the most part, if they do play multi-player games, my children play together across our home network.

I love all sorts, apart from FPS games, I guess. I remember getting frustrated at...might have been Myst...when you had to complete tasks in order to proceed, but you were never told what the task was and it was often far from obvious. Suffice to say that for that and the Lara Croft game I ended up using walkthroughs. I'm envious of folk who can finish games like GTA.

I use Big Fish Games. Their games are mostly Point + Click but you get some interesting ones. A lot of Match 3 and building games. They have a new one every day but they are often just rehashes of others but you sometimes get a really good game that is worth the price of membership. They have now begun to provide Free to Play games but you have to be careful with those because the further you go, the harder it becomes to complete the challenges without spending actual money on bonuses.

Yes, this business model where you give away games, and make people have to make in-app purchases is a disgrace. Rather than telling you that the game is free (and that you have to make in-app purchases to complete the game, they should be forced to lay out these costs that is easy for everybody to see. If you want to make it free, then there should be no in-app purchases.
Amazon have a category where they say that certain games with in-app purchases that will cost you nothing (as part of a special deal) are actually free, but that is Amazon's decision more than the developer's. Developers should be forced to make a decision. If you pay up front, there should be no game-play costs, unless completely new game play is introduced to the game, completely new objectives are added and so on.

TBF to BFG, you can complete the games without in-app purchases. Mainly cos they aren't apps, they are proper games. It just takes longer. They do the games as apps but I don't use them cos I don't play on my phone. Games just destroy the battery. I have to charge the damn thing up often enough as it is.
But I would imagine it's the same principle.

I like the walking around trying to figure out what I should be doing, but I generally do eventually reach for the walkthrough. That doesn't diminish my pleasure in the game if the story and graphics are good and the puzzles are varied and creative. What turns me off are ridiculously complicated puzzles - like one that required me to understand a base 8 numbering system.

Blimey....
Yeah, even with the walkthrough some games can still be fairly complex but I have to confess I don't feel much of a sense of satisfaction if I've used one.
