Sony Movies tonight, (15th) at 7pm.
Based on a cult 1960s supernatural soap opera. Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins a vampire, who returns to his stately home after two centuries of hibernation. A Tim Burton production.
I had heard of the original series, but have never seen it. Anything with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton will have me watching it.

The film is nothing like the series. The series was a daily gothic and macabre soap opera.
Jonathan Frid played Barnabas Collins in a manner similar to how Christopher Lee played Dracula with understated dignity.
For whatever reason Tim Burton chose to turn it into a camp comedy with Jonhnny Depp chewing up the scenery as if he was in Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I wasn't quite sure what is was supposed to be. It certainly didn't feel like a comedy. Found it rather slow and ponderous, and in the witch's case rather OTT with the acting.

I like Johnny Depp but I dont really care much for Tim Burton stuff.
The two exceptions are "Ed Wood" which was remarkably restrained by Burton's standards, and "Sleepy Hollow" at least the first 2/3 of "Sleepy Hollow" anyway.

The TV series was slow, but it was a daily soap opera and by their nature are very slow in their story arcs.
It was reminiscent of a Hammer Studios horror film of the late 50's, very elegant and gothic, just with American accents.
One of my local repeat stations shows it nightly. You can dip in and out without really having to follow it every day to enjoy individual episodes here and there as a nice "of its time" novelty.
