Have you noticed that newspaper menus have come down to reality with ingredients that we have not only heard of but might even have in a cupboard or fridge? We found a tightly screwed down pot of smoked paprika - why we bought it no one seems to recall but lashings of it in a sausage casserole lifted it from the mundane up to the this ain't half bad notch - our house does not do lavish praise. Anyone else having a fling with ingredients on hand? (And why we have two jars of fenugreek. I have no idea - what is it for?)

I'm quite partial to tinned haggis – very fatty so you have to open both ends of the tin and squeeze it out, then scrape off the hard fat. Anyway, I found a tin the other day that is five years out of date! Still debating whether or not to eat it ...

Open it and have a smell. If it's covered in fat, you'll know straight away if it's off.

Some pearl barley was lurking in a container and no one can recall when we last used some. Anyway, tossed into a casserole and it made a pleasant and rather nostalgic change. And making room in the freezer for all the stuff - too much - ordered when we got a delivery slot produced a heap of assorted fruits to be used...… mixed fruit crumble turned out very well. This year's raspberries are on their way! Grow your own if you have a couple of feet of garden - very very easy to grow and very rewarding because they. freeze well.
