I've been enjoying the third installment of the Penny Dreadful series.
This series is set in 1930s Los Angeles and centers around the grisly discovery of a mudered prominent citizen and his family in what appears to be a ritualistic sacrifice related to Mexican occult religion.
The lead character (Daniel Zovatto) is the first Mexican detective on the Los Angeles police force. He is deeply divided between his culture and his duty as a cop.
His partner is played by the brilliant Nathan Lane. So odd to see him in the Danny Glover role of tough, gritty, world weary cop reaching retirement. He is so often cast as the camp, flaming gay role. His character is Jewish and he is part of a small vigilante group that is keeping an eye on growing Nazi activity at local universities that have nuclear science departments (to gather Intel on A-bomb research.)
Briton Natalie Dormer steals the show playing a spectre who inhabits no less than five different roles - battered housewife, shrewish political aid, Mexican gang leader, white angel, dark angel.
Briton Rory Kinnear (who played Frankenstein's monster in series 1 and 2) plays a believable German doctor who is head of the Los Angeles Nazi party and holds rallies on his lunch break to foster the antisemitism that was prevalent in the US and was at least partly responsible for the US late entry into WWII. As with his portrayal of Frankensteins monster his performance here is very gentle and makes an otherwise unpleasant character a very sympathetic victim of his circumstances and something of an antihero. He is a very, very good actor.
Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) has a small but very engaging role as the head of the Jewish mafia in Los Angeles. Nathan Lane approaches him to help stop the rise of the Nazis when he realizes his bosses at the police department cant be bothered.
Brent Spiner (Data on Star Trek TNG) very good as the cold, distant police captain.
New Zealander Kerry Bishe has a very interesting role as a religious revivalist performer and veteran actress Amy Madigan as her hard, unbending puritanical mother/manager.
This series is not as supernatural as the first two set in Victorian England.
It's more along the lines of "La Confidential" or "Chinatown" in a film noir feel. With a little "Angel Heart" mixed in to give it a decent dose of spooky.
