Perry Mason will receive its UK premiere on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Monday June 22nd (time-slot TBC). Perry Mason is set in 1931, Los Angeles. While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong.

The drama series, which is based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, stars Matthew Rhys, John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Eric Lange, and Robert Patrick.

I dont know if anyone can ever replace Raymond Burr and his smooth, calm demeanor as he drove around Los Angeles in his building sized convertible car, dressed in an impeccable suit and tie no matter if the temperature was 38C in the California sun. Burr was a portly fellow but never seemed to perspire. He was the essence of cool. His ever vigilant and efficient personal secretary (as they were known then) Della Street on hand to use her advance degree college educated skills as a paralegal to draw up complex legal documents, or make coffee and sandwiches (as secretaries did back then) for Perry and his handsome, square jawed, chain smoking private detective Paul Drake. The other actors and people involved with the long running series all said how humble and gentle Raymond Burr was and that he insisted that the writers give ample screen time to all the players, even if it meant cutting paragraphs of his own dialog as they read through in each week's new script.

This version is as far from the original as it is possible to be! "Perry" is played by Welsh actor Matthew Rhys as a scruffy, foul-mouthed PI with an estranged wife and a 9 year old son.
Having said that Rhys is excellent! They should have called it something else!

Indeed. That's just weird.
That's like having a tribute band called Liverpool Lads and dressed like the Beatles who come out and play ABBA songs.
