Forty years ago, Alan Parker’s musical about a group of teenagers at the New York High School for the Performing Arts was released.Originally titled Hot Lunch after one of the composer Christopher Hope’s key numbers, the film is a crowd-pleaser with a heart of ice. For all the fun and legwarmers, this isn’t some starry-eyed fantasy. Rather, its edge and pessimism make it a remarkably responsible piece of film-making, with a conclusion about the wisdom of pursuing a career in the arts that is ambivalent at best. Suddenly, during production: “Can you think of another title? We’ve got to come up with something else in two days.” It turned out there was a porno movie on release also called Hot Lunch [the term is New York slang for oral sex]. Here is an interesting article/oral history with recollections from members of the cast: It was one of the last films I ever saw in a cinema.

The long-running TV series was much better than the film (if you were able to overlook the fact that some of the characters like Leroy and Danny seemed to be in high school forever.) Also, while Leroy's dancing was clearly off the charts good, Danny was at the school to pursue standup comedy and acting and he didnt seem all that good at either so it's a wonder he passed the rigorous series of auditions to get accepted to such a hard to get in school. Doris was the funnier comic, actress and had a nice singing voice as well.
With such a large ensemble cast the tv series gave a lot of time for character development and the production numbers each week were fabulous.
The show was sort of a combination of "To Sir with Love" and "Flashdance."

The series wasn't nearly as dark as the film, IMO. Yeah it had it's moments but it was generally fluffier

That's for sure. Didn't Leroy get one of the female students preggers in the film and she had to go off for an abortion?
They remade the film. Kelsey Grammer I believe played the classical music teacher. I didn't see it but it didn't rate well with critics.
