Channel 5 and Acorn TV have ordered Dalgliesh, a new adaptation of the stories by P.D. James.
Six episodes have been commissioned, which are expected to air in 2021. Bertie Carvel (The Pale Horse, Doctor Foster) is attached to star in the title role.
Dalgliesh starts in 1970s England and follows Dalgliesh’s career to present day as he solves unusual murders and reveals buried secrets. Each murder mystery will offer its own unique setting and extraordinary cast.
The six episodes will comprise three two-part stories, all of which are based on three of the Dalgiesh novels.
The novels being adapted for the first series are Shroud For A Nightingale, The Black Tower, and A Taste For Death.
In Shroud For A Nightingale, the young women of Nightingale House are there to learn to nurse and comfort the sick. When one of the students is horribly, brutally killed it is up to Adam Dalgliesh to unmask a killer who has decided to prescribe murder as the cure for all ills.
Set on the Dorset coast, The Black Tower is a dark investigation into a strange home for the disabled where the caring community is not quite as caring as it proports to be.
Lastly, in A Taste For Death, two men lie in a pool of blood at St. Matthews Church Paddington, one is a homeless pensioner, the other a Minister of the Crown, Dalgliesh must dig beneath ugly and dangerous family secrets to bring the murderer to justice.

I like Bertie Carvel and can imagine him following in the footsteps of the marvellous Roy Marsden, who played the role in Anglia TV's adaptations in the 1980s and 90s. I didn't much care for Martin Shaw in the role later on.
It'll be interesting to see how they handle PD James's stories which are pretty rooted in their time, as was PD James herself of course.

I don't much care for Martin Shaw in any role. I found him extremely boring as Cecil Rhodes in the 1990s series, which he went a long way towards spoiling for me, and have hardly watched him in anything since - including not watching him as Adam Dalgliesh. As far as I remember I watched all the Roy Marsden ones - at the time it was unthinkable that anyone else would play the role!

I thought he was great in The Professionals, though I was a teenager at the time! And he has moved away from talking about the role, interestingly. I saw him on stage in An Ideal Husband, playing the Oscar Wilde role (can't remember the name of the character, Lord something) and didn't really rate him. He is unable to alter his accent to suit the role, which is fine – never did Shur Sean any harm! – but he seems to feel the need to try.
