The series previously aired in the UK on StarzPlay.

Thanks Dame. Sounds good, and with an excellent cast. Will mark that one off in my radio Times.

Looks interesting. It has a high user rating on imdb, although a fair number of reviewers (mainly Russian, I suspect) hated it for historical inaccuracies and/or disgusting content & language.

Well this is playing fast and loose with the timeline isn’t it? They were married before he became Tsar, were they not? However, if you move all that to one side, it was quite a lark I suppose. I am approaching this in the same way I approached Rob Lowe as a chief constable in Wild Bill.

I'm not familiar with the history so not bothered by any liberties they may have taken! I enjoyed the first episode, treating it as an irreverant OTT romp. There are some quite unpleasant moments - the poor bear!

I hope that no one is taking this seriously. Quite apart from the anachronisms of the language, historically, it is absolute nonsense. It should be taken with a very large pinch of salt. No wonder the Russians hate it.

Couldn't watch the eye scene - is that factually correct.

Couldn't watch the eye scene - is that factually correct. I doubt it very much.

I abandoned ship in episode 2. I just thought the writer was throwing everything at it for effect and it lost its power. So many f-bombs and anachronisms. I don’t mind either of those in dramas if done with aplomb but for some reason this didn’t work for me. Also, I found Elle Fanning very unconvincing. Her maid, the deposed aristocrat, was the best one in it for me. I realised that for a comedy drama I had barely laughed so switched off.

I'm still watching and quite enjoying it, treating it as a sort of Blackadder take on history. It isn't really laugh-out-loud comedy, but I'm finding it entertaining.

I've seen S2 (is on StarzPlay, Amazon Prime add-on). Continues in the same vein as S1 with mostly the same characters. Gillian Anderson plays Catherine's mother (not till episode 7).
