The Murders will premiere on 5USA on Wednesday January 6th at 9pm.
The Murders follows rookie Homicide Detective Kate Jameson, who is the biracial daughter of an ambitious and well-loved mother, and her dearly departed father who was a decorated Vancouver police officer killed in the line of duty.
With the fight for justice deeply rooted in her, Kate’s only desire is to be a good cop like her father. She’s determined to make her mark in Homicide, the MPD’s most coveted assignment.
But things go horribly awry on her first day, when Kate breaks the number one rule of policing — never leave your gun unattended. Haunted by her fatal mistake, a driven Kate will seek to make amends through every case and ongoing investigation – including that of a mysterious killer with a particular obsession with Detective Jameson.
The drama series stars Jessica Lucas (Gotham), Dylan Bruce (Orphan Black), Terry Chen (Jessica Jones), and Luvia Petersen (Ghost Wars).
The series previously aired in the UK on the now defunct Universal TV.

Does any rookie cop start out day one onthe job as a detective in the homicide department of a precinct in a major city?
Maybe that explains losing her service weapon before lunch.
Maybe that's possible in Canada I dont know.
I'm pretty sure in the US you'd have to be a uniformed patrol cop for a number of years before being eligible for a promotion to detective.
Then work your way through lesser departments like vice or general investigations for non violent crimes like theft, arson, vandalism etc before applying to homicide.
But it is a fictional tv show and Canadian programs tend to be pretty light on plot and more soap-ish.
Rookie Blue being an example, and now thst i think about it, that show is proof that in Canada rookies start out as uniformed patrol officers with their guns in belt holsters.

That's a good point! It's the same here, you have do time in uniform first and then apply to be plainclothes.

I think she is being fast tracked as she got the highest scores in the Academy for decades! And people are fast tracked here now arent they, straight into CID? And I believe some people can join as a DI, but I dont know where I read that. However her mistake didnt just lead to one death! Her dodgy partner decided to cover her mistake (I hate it when that happens) so both he and the actual killer ended up dead. So that is three bodies with no sign of any due process! Still it was pretty watchable in a Rookie Blue kind of way.

Just coz someone is good at exams, doesn't necessarily mean they are going to be good in the field!

To be fast tracked in the UK, you HAVE to be a serving police officer, looking to reach the rank of inspector within two years of joining the programme, and ultimately superintendent, not necessarily a detective (CID).
The other option is Direct Entry at Inspector programme which is currently suspended. It involves two years of training.

This has finished already! There were only 10 episodes and I don’t know if there is a second series. I didn’t think it was too bad, but it certainly wasn’t great.
