Tuesday (12th) at 8 pm. (1/3) (Repeat)
He start off on Lord Howe Island, where he learns to shimmy up a Kentie palm, then on to Norfolk Island, which has a dark past, then to Restoration Island, where he meets a businessman who gave up on the high life to live off the land. I don't know how I missed this originally, sounds interesting, I'll be watching.

One of the unfortunate things for Australia is that it is just so far away and a very expensive place to holiday on top of it that tourists would likely only visit there once in their lives and stick to the main tourist hot spots on the mainland, Sydney, Melbourne, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and also add in Cairns if they want to SCUBA the Great Barrier Reef.
Visiting Tasmania or the Kimberleys or some of the other outter islands is not on a standard holiday package.
It is good to see travelogue programs cover some of these off the beaten path locales.

They get some cushy numbers these celebs don't they, you can picture it:
Clunes agent to TV exec: Hello Martin is going on holiday to AUstralia in November. He could pop to a couple of gorgeous islands and do a bit of a programme.
TV Exec: What's the deal?
Clunes Agent: Pay him X for 4 days work, he'll love it.
TV Exec: That's all
Clunes Agent: Well obviously flights to the islands and hotel accommodation for him and his family, your researcher, editor and film crew. And he doesn't have Covid?
TV Exec: Ok, can we have a hairy bit where he might just see a shark in the water, possibly, I mean we can always edit in some footage from some other programme but get the reaction shots. Oh and a clip of an interview with a very eccentric local who he is perfectly polite to then laughs about or criticises afterwards, that always goes down well - you know a sarcastic voice over thing.
Clunes Agent: Deal.

In reality it is nothing like that,as you probably know.
Funny how nobody ever criticises anything by David Attenborough, made in precisely the same way.

Doesn't David Attenborough mainly do voice-over narration to wildlife footage these days? Rather than interactive on screen, on site travelogues? I am not arguing against your valid point, I was only thinking of it from my personal familiarity with Mr. Attenborough's recent work which comes from Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, Seven Worlds One Planet etc. My familiarity with him this century is not as an "in the field" presenter, but as someone who goes to a recording studio and reads a script. Anything beyond that is my own ignorance. I am aware of his long career being in the field in his younger days.

David Attenborough is a trusted National Treasure who has spent many years educating us. Martin Clunes is a celeb off on a jolly.

That's exactly my point Miranda. He's not a travel writer, geographer, ecologist or a specialist presenter. They don't typically present the kind of scenario I suggested. When they talk to a local, they listen and actually generally only talk to them if it is relevant because mostly they're telling us about the flora and fauna and local history/ecology.
They don't normally do a bit of fishing unless they are talking about cultural ways this happens. They just have more to tell us.
Clunes might be great, it might be amusing. Lumley's jaunts in the East have been interesting but she lived there and does understand the culture a little. She was impeccably polite to everyone she met and stayed with including whatever food they offered. Even so, it's been a lovely earner for her.

Yankee, see if you can find Attenborough's programme about birds of Paradise. That was him at his best when he was out in the field. The one from the late 70s though. Not the 2015 one.

Gosh ,if that is the way it goes, you are going detest the upcoming travelogue with 3 of the Chasers.
So when films and tv are made on location, that must be a jolly as well.
I just look on it as programme making, not a free holiday.

And that's fine for you. But not all of us see it that way. Not sure why you are arguing with Bev about this. And the patronising tone isn't great either.
I am going to shut this down as it's turning into an argument. And don't think any of us need that today. Be nice, please.
