Don't know if anyone else was as excited as we were at the weekend, to hear the The Top 20, most popular Musical Song Ever. On Elaine Paige's slot after lunch on Sunday.
This had been advertised all week on Radio 2. We set our topbox to "Record" and sat down excitedly, to hear some of the best ever songs from musicals, which we love. During the first 4 songs, we had only heard two of them in the past! Out of dozens and dozens of wonderful, memorable songs.... We began to be suspicious. Then Elaine said that they had been voted for by the listeners from a shortlist.
That gave us a clue - the whole thing was engineered, as instead of giving everyone the chance to name their favourite ones, they were being steered towards their choices. Did anyone do the voting, and if so, what were the number of songs to choose from?
Eventually, we did like the last two songs voted at the top, from Le Miserables, but sadly they were then sung by Alfie Boe, who is not the best one to choose from, from the many versions of these. What a huge disappointment the whole thing was - we felt flat afterwards.

All I know is that we listen to R2 at work and last Friday it was musicals all day and I was done in by lunchtime and changed it to a local pop radio station. Some dreadful tunes and lots of warbling and I was finished.

True and if you don't know the musical or the context some of them just dirge for dirge's sake. The only time I have ever fallen asleep at the theatre was Aspects of Love, my ex nudged me at some point and we went home.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don’t like the music from The Greatest Showman.

I was disappointed in the film. Apart from the subject matter, where they made their hero into a jolly showman when actually he had exploited animals, I only liked one tune - "This is Me"

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don’t like the music from The Greatest Showman. It was all a bit shouty for me. Sure he gave all these people work but only because they were happy to be displayed as freaks. I don't think the exploitation came over as much as it should.

People, animals, it was all about his own reputation and bank account to him and sod the performers. I’m a big Jackman fan, but I think he made a bad decision with this.
