The BBC bonkfest The Tudors is being aired on More4 from Thursday 18 February at 10.00.
Hurrah! I have the DVD box set which has been sitting next to the TV since lockdown 1 so this might finally nudge me to watch it again.

I really didn't like this. Elizabeth R, the Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Shadow of the Tower were much better, to my mind.

It had it's place, it was fantasy but that's how many people get their introduction to history.

I enjoyed it, despite (or maybe because of?) its heavy tinkering with history throughout, but don't think I'll be embarking on a re-watch at the moment.
My first thought on seeing it in the schedules was that it's a strange decision by More4 to pick this particular show for a rerun - perhaps inspired by The Great, with its similar attitude to actual history, running on C4 (which I'm still watching and enjoying btw, but The Tudors was better).

I never saw it the first time around, so made sure to mark it off in the Radio Times this time.

It DID stick to the historical facts with accuracy though - just portrayed everyone as a soap star! And Henry should have been recast between wives 3 and 4. He was no longer dish of the day once he was unable to ride after the jousting accident which, some historians reckon, caused her personality to change and not in a good way.

I was rather pleased he stayed much the same! 😏

Oh yes - very easy on the eye. But historically he was no longer the viral man he had been in his glorious youth.
More Michelin Man than Monarch sadly.

Hmmm - maybe some, but there was at least one howler. It merged Henry's two sisters (Mary and Margaret) into one, called Margaret in the series and played by Gabrielle Anwar. This merged sister was married off to the aged King of Portugal (which I don't think happened to either sister in real life), who promptly died. Then "Margaret" went to France, which is actually what Mary did, but unlike the real Margaret at no stage had any connection with Scotland - thus rendering impossible the existence of Mary Queen of Scots or any Stuart kings of England!

That was a bit blurred, true (it is years since I watched this series) but the political intrigues and the break from the Catholic church were portrayed well.
IMO.
