Kate Winslet stars in HBO's dark new seven-part miniseries playing Mare Sheehan, a detective in the Pennsylvania town of Easttown, who is sucked into a murder inquiry while her personal life falls apart.
I wasn't too sure of this at first but by the end I was hooked.

I've started watching. Like you I was a bit iffy at first, because Mare is such a world-weary character, but was completely drawn in by the end and definitely plan to continue. Quite a different role for Kate Winslet. I did have to look up the cast afterwards to verify if and how the main characters were related. There seem to be 7 episodes, a slightly strange number.

I’ve watched the first two so far and I’m not a fan of KW (didn’t even recognise her at first), but the story has won me over. However, I am finding it hard to differentiate between all the dark-haired, beardy men.

This gets better and better for me, and I'm finding Kate Winslet's performance terrific.
I thought Easttown was fictitious, but apparently it's a real place in Pennsylvania with a population of around 10,000.

OMG, this is such a good show. Even if half of it is in the dark and I’m squinting at the screen!
