Friday (27th) at 7 pm (1/2)
Steve Backshall begins his exploration into the world of the red fox, a survivor, and master of adaption. Haven't seen Steve on our screens much lately, looking forward to this, I love foxes.

From orphaned cubs, to a family venturing out of the Den for the first time, this looks to be a delightful series. There are some lovely humans around who devote their time to caring for injured and abandoned foxes. Mostly in their own homes. Magical moments when we see cubs playing together, and 'catching' already dead small animals.Nick Ball a wildlife cameraman was happy when he filmed a fox for the first time in the wild. Shame it's only two episodes, but am looking forward to next week.

I enjoyed it, and look forward to the other episode. It was more informative than I expected and contained quite a lot I didn't know. I hadn't realised nets such as ones that are part of goals are a major hazard to cubs, the ones we saw were lucky not to lose limbs. Also did they say there are still more foxes in the countryside than in towns & cities? - I was a bit surprised, thought the urban population might have overtaken the rural one by now.

I expect more foxes get killed in urban areas than rural. Mainly due to traffic.

Yes, the programme gave a statistic about that (but I can't remember what it was!)

I am not a fan of foxes because the ones we get round here are usually very mangey urban foxes, not the fluffy red rural fox, and we seem to have a fox run, even a badger run, across our garden as they always use the same route, but I did enjoy the programme. I was surprised the vixen scream which is so deafening is a mating call; I thought it was when they were in the throes of ecstasy! We did have a particularly scrawny old chap who crossed through a lot, but we seem to get younger, healthier ones this year so maybe he has met his Maker. Every Friday at drinks someone usually says “there’s the fox” as he comes through the hedge, but I always miss him from my seat.
