Well this my first trip to anything for about 18 months and it was quite a let down. It is a two hander where a young woman in a clingy satin dress has a job interview/networking meeting with the head of a global charity. Well, there has never been sexual tension like this at any job interview I’ve had. She has arranged this in a private bar in a luxury hotel, and quaffs champagne like there’s no tomorrow. They adjourn upstairs… They get ready for some bondage… There is then endless discussion about gender and sexual politics (by the end of which I frankly would have preferred to watch some bondage and I was squirming in my seat when the handcuffs came out!) Then there is the big reveal, which I had guessed about 30minutes before.
The chap who played the charity guy was good, very persuasive as a silver-tongued seducer who can have his way whilst still justifying his behaviour. I don’t know much about the girl as I could barely hear her half the time, and the Rose is not a huge space. The theatre was half empty (at least) because of their covid seating arrangements as much as anything, but it only got very tepid applause from the underwhelmed audience. No whooping because we were so glad to be back.
It is a piece that makes you think afterwards, but it is not a very well constructed piece. OK for TV I would imagine, though.
