The Long Call will premiere on ITV on Monday October 25th at 9pm.
The Long Call follows Detective Inspector Matthew Venn, who has returned to live in a small community in North Devon with his husband, Jonathan.
Matthew was brought up in the Barum Brethren before leaving to go to University. At 19 he knew he couldn’t continue amongst the community and to his mother’s shock and dismay, he declared publicly he no longer believed. Now he’s back, not just to grieve for his father, but to lead a shocking murder investigation back where it all began for him.
Matthew is now forced to re-engage with the community he left, including the most painful and challenging of relationships, with his mother Dorothy.
After the body of a man is found on the beach close to Matthew’s home, the investigation throws a cast of doubt on the whole community. Matthew and his team have to get to the bottom of a case which bring with it old wounds and a deadly secret in order to expose the killer.
The drama series, which is based on the novel by Ann Cleeves, stars Bel Aldridge, Pearl Mackie, Juliet Stevenson, Martin Shaw, Anita Dobson, Dylan Edwards, Pearce Quigley, Neil Morrissey, Sarah Gordy, Alan Williams and Amit Shah.

I’ve read this book and thought it was great. I’ve never read any Anne Cleeves before and thought it was too late to start on the Vera or Shetland series, but I shall definitely buy more of this lot.

I've yet to watch my recording but, I have to say, I was a bit disappointed when I read the book. Being such a fan of Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez, I didn't think Matthew Venn quite measured up to either of them as a character. Maybe seeing it as a television series will make me feel differently about him.
Btw marion, it's never too late to start reading the Vera and Shetland series of books! I'm still gradually working my way through them as and when I come across one I haven't read yet. My local librarian tells me there is a new Matthew Venn either just out or about to come out. I will definitely give it a chance in spite of what I said about him not comparing because Ann Cleeves is such a good writer.

I’m recording all of them, as with one thing and another I’m not going to be able to watch “live”. So I will see how these comments go as to whether I watch it or not.

Oh, the recording of episode 1 failed. That puts a different spin on it. It now has to be worth me enduring the STV hub. Will look forward to comments

I found Ep 1 very slow and dull. The final minutes bucked up though and so I shall try Ep 2. I hope it builds momentum now.

Now I've watched episode one I still think Matthew Venn doesn't hold a candle to Vera or Jimmy Perez as an interesting character: he lacks the charisma of those two. I don't think it's helped by the actor chosen to play him. Both he and the woman playing his side-kick would benefit from taking lessons in diction from fellow cast members Martin Shaw and Juliet Stevenson. I could hear every word they said whereas I kept missing whole chunks of dialogue spoken (or gabbled) by the two younger actors.

When did they change the beach at Ilfracombe to yellow sand? I remember it as black pebble....
I see what you mean about the dialogue. The volume is bloody awful. It's rare I have to use subtitles but I have them now. And it's not a problem with the accents but it's really mumbly. Especially the two main characters.

This Matthew Vern, he's no Vera is he? And the actor can't hold a candle to Brenda Blethyn.

There's a similar cult in Bristol. Or was when I lived there. The women wore those headscarves.

I think it’s fairest to say at that moment I like it but I don’t love it.

Sequel is called The heron’s cry, it’s on my tbr pile, which is going to topple over soon! Hb was in my local Sainsbury’s for £10.

Paperbacks are now a tenner in a supermarket? Ouch. Thank the gods for my library card!
