I used to like Lovejoy, I still sometimes watch the repeats on freeview but they are not on that often compared to other things.

The Tripods, an '80s BBC sci-fi series based on John Christopher's novels, was excellent. Occasionally the effects were a bit ropey, but I've seen worse from the era, and the Tripods themselves were never less than impressive. The only annoying thing was that it was cancelled due to cost after they'd only done two of the trilogy, so the series ended on a cliffhanger - and a pretty grim one at that!
The Day of the Triffids is also worth seeking out - the 1981 version, not the more recent one. Alternately disturbing and exciting, tense and shocking. The Triffids are a great design (apparently one was displayed at the Natural History Museum for a while!)

The 81 Triffids was brilliant. And pretty close to the book. Which is always a good sign

The Tripods! I've been waiting for that 3rd series for 30 odd years.

I enjoyed the Howard Keel version of Triffids (which also featured Carole-Anne Ford from Doctor Who) but why did Howard Keel keep shouting? The 1981 version was my favourite though.

I don't know whether they will ever show any but Z cars started after Dixon of Dock Green finished, and then Softley Softley , they were probably in black & white maybe before video recording

I think that you would really have to go for the earlier Dixon's and Z-Cars. Both went on, in one form or another up until the 1970's but by the end they seemed out of place. George Dixon was almost going after criminals with a zimmer frame by the end.
Ones that I did like were Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; and the later Smiley's People. Though they were not long series, I would definitely recommend them.

Something else I would recommend is Michael Gambon's version of Maigret, which I have just dusted out of the closet. I just about remember the earlier one in black and white version with Rupert Davies. There were more of them, but I don't think any of them survived to dvd.

Testament of Youth was pretty good, but I've only watched one episode. Who was also in Lillie, another worth a watch. And finally The Duchess of Duke Street! (with Gemma Jones, whose name I couldn't remember). Used to very much enjoy DoDS and Lillie. Is that the Testament of Youth starring Cheryl Campbell? Have the boxed set of that and very much enjoyed it. I'd also like to see The Onedin Line with Anne Stallybrass and Peter somebody or other. Name escapes at the moment. Wouldn't mind a re run of The Mayor of Casterbridge, again with Anne Stallybrass. Or The Barchester Chronicles. EDIT : Peter Gilmore not forgetting the wonderful theme tune by Aram Khachaturian - Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia.

Callan, The Sandbaggers, Public Eye. The first two, certainly for people who like proper spy thrillers.
And, of course Cadfael. I am currently watching the first Cadfael, One Corpse too Many.

I'm not a big US comedy fan, not so much the 'filmed in front of a live studio audience' shows. I do prefer UK comedy, but there are exceptions. There's a show called Wings, which I love, starring Steven Weber and Tim Daly, with Tony Shaloub and Thomas Haden Church. It's set in a tiny airport in Nantucket where Brian and Joe Hackett run a one plane business taking people to New England towns. They had a cameo by Norm and Cliff from Cheers, where they're supposed to travel from Boston to go fishing. Some of my favourite episodes are Sports & Leisure, Murder She Roast, The Lyin' King
