This is an Emma Rice production and I usually love her stuff. I didn’t love this although most of the audience seemed to, especially the school parties! It is very well done creatively, the songs, dancing and, as usual, puppets!!! Love the puppets. I have no idea who was in it, no big names so far as I am aware. Heathcliff had been replaced but I’m not sure if they share the role. Anyway, we saw Liam Tamne of whom I have never heard but he was on The Voice, starred inThe Prince of Egypt and has done other musical theatre. I had to Google him and was surprised to see he was born in Coventry because he played Heathcliff with a really strong Indian accent so I don’t know if that was an artistic choice or how he speaks.
The trouble with this for me was that there was no chemistry whatsoever between Heathcliff and Cathy, and a lack of intensity. I thought he was OK and she was poor but my friend thought she was great! The ensemble did better than the two leads imho, and there were elements which really worked well. Normally I hire the headphones at the National but forgot this time (as it’s been so long!) and have to say I was able to hear it all very well. Mind you it wasn’t in the cavernous Olivier which is the litmus test!!!
This had fantastic reviews when it launched elsewhere so I was really looking forward to it, but was slightly disappointed. Still, it’s a theatre outing at least!
