I forgot to post about this last week. I still enjoy it but was amazed that Amit was still in the show. However it was a double firing last week when they failed with the children’s grab and go food. There seemed to be lots of spillage opportunities with some of the stuff! But the chocolate Rocky Road cookie thing, crammed with sugar, was a hoot as the healthy dessert, and the woman behind that suggestion (whom I quite liked) got fired. And then, double firing! Amit was fired for being someone who disrupted the team and no one could work with. When they told him what they would do in the pitch, and he had to keep quiet, you just knew he would blurt out something to derail it, and of course he didn’t disappoint! I must say many of the offerings these fiture stars present have been less than impressive, 😂. I do think Gordon has brought in some top notch guests to do the judging/opining though.

This week they had to run the breakfast service at the Savoy. It was a total shambles! The maitre d’ was terrifying! According to a friend of mine who used to work for Ramsay’s he is a legend in the industry. It was a good episode but how that Italian Vegan, Valentina, is still in it is beyond me.

I’ve watched a couple of them.
First, there was the one where they took over Mollie’s Diner, supposedly an American-style diner. I’ve eaten at American diners and had great food at reasonable prices. I’ve eaten at Mollie’s and it was tosh. I’m not sure Gordon mentioned that it’s owned by the people who own Soho Farmhouse, but I would guess they’re friends of his. And I would also guess everyone’s meals were comped, because his protégés all seemed a bit useless.
Then there was the one at the Savoy Grill, which was jaw-droppingly awful. Again, I assume anyone who actually managed to get their fork on some food didn’t have to pay for it. Because otherwise they’ll never go there again!

It was the semi final this week and thankfully the temperamental Valentina has said Ciao. What a PITA she was. How anyone making a “cook it at home” dish can tell the other team member you don’t need specific instructions and not to write it down (for the recipe card!) but not to worry as it was all in her head beggars belief. then she stormed off in a strop and the resulting card did not have a prep time, a cooking time or pasta making instructions. Hopeless. I was amazed she lasted that long but at least the three I disliked most have all left. I thought they might be the losing team when Gordon ripped up their card and spat out (discreetly, not across the floor!) one of their tortellini.

I snort-laughed so hard when she told Gordon he could mentor her in self-control 🤣🤣🤣🤣

One aspect I really liked about the final: all three contestants were given help from their actual industry to improve their product. How much would a London agency charge to redesign your image, or your pop-up? Plus, the chance to interact with proper corporate contacts. They probably got thousands of pounds worth of advice even if they didn’t win.

I couldn’t agree more, Beth. The final was a professional piece of work, not some omnishambles, and Gordon was very positive with the finalists too. A refreshing change from boardroom rows in this show which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I would certainly watch another series. I was also impressed with the calibre of the experts he brought in to assess all the tasks.

Series 2 begins on Thursday 30 March at 9.00 on BBC1. I quite enjoyed the first series, but that was a minority view so I’m quite surprised it was recommissioned.

I watched episode 1 yesterday and thought it was hilarious! From the start where the chap (a bar owner) wanting to create the cocktail said it should be whisky based as they were at a Scottish castle for a themed feast. The young woman on the team who was insisting on gin with elderflower cordial asked whether that connection of whisky to Scotland was widely known though!!!! So they made whisky with elderflower which Gordon thought was disgusting, and iirc spat out! And to clear a table quickly others took a slop bucket to the table and scraped the plates into it! It’s supposed to be five star service fulminated Gordon.
