Season 2 of this story of Rome seen from a woman's viewpoint has been confirmed for transmission next year.
I enjoyed the first series which opens just after the assassination of Julius Caesar. The main character is Livia Drusilla, married to Gaius - adopted son of Julius Caesar and eventually to become the emperor Augustus, though series 1 doesn't reach that point. Livia struggles to keep her family safe and in power, and the series is full of intrigue as she plots and engineers actions to achieve that.
The characters are mostly real people - the series creator says "We didn’t invent any characters except slaves or murderers or the owners of a brothel". Livia is played by Polish/Italian actress Kasia Smutniak; familiar names in the cast include Matthew McNulty, Liam Cunningham, Ben Batt and Christine Bottomley. The series is filmed in Rome.
